WASHINGTON, D.C. — Last Wednesday, over 20 US and international organizations sent a letter to the State Department urging it to support Colombian government-ELN peace negotiations.
With regards to the letter, Demand Progress Foreign Policy Advisor Cavan Kharrazian issued the following statement:
“There is a lot of work to be done in securing a permanent, comprehensive peace in Colombia. For decades, the United States’ failed militarization strategy in the country has been antithetical to this objective, and it is imperative for the administration and Congress to reverse the harm caused by past US policies. That’s why we are calling for the administration to build upon previous, commendable US support for the 2016 accords through financing and diplomacy; to support negotiations with the ELN; and to reverse Trump-era policies by de-listing Cuba, who has played a constructive role in these negotiations, from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list. We will continue to advocate with allied organizations to this end.”
