Washington, D.C. — On Saturday, President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. bombed three Iranian nuclear sites. This week, the U.S. Senate will vote on a war powers resolution introduced by Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) that would require the president to seek congressional approval to go to war with Iran. Demand Progress has led a campaign calling on Americans to tell their members of Congress to support the war powers resolutions and oppose war with Iran.
The following is a statement from Demand Progress Senior Policy Advisor Cavan Kharrazian:
“Trump’s unconstitutional bombing of Iran is shockingly reckless and illegal. Completely defying public opinion, the president bypassed Congress, ignored the Constitution and launched a strike that has put the United States on a course toward another catastrophic war in the Middle East—all without debate, without a vote and without a plan. Because of President Trump, thousands of U.S. servicemembers and embassy staff across the region are now in immediate danger. Congress must act now by passing the Iran War Powers Resolutions to halt further escalation and reassert its constitutional authority.”
