Demand Progress Applauds Massie, Khanna War Powers Resolution

Poll Shows 56% of Republican Voters Want the President to Seek Congressional Approval Before Striking Foreign Countries

Washington, D.C. — On Monday evening, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Rep. Khanna (D-CA) announced that they will introduce a resolution that would require the president to seek congressional authorization before taking direct military action against Iran. Earlier on Monday, Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) introduced a similar resolution in the Senate. Demand Progress has opposed unauthorized, unilateral military action under presidents from both parties and also commissioned a national poll showing that 53 percent of registered voters—and a whopping 56 percent of Republicans—believe President Trump should obtain congressional authorization before striking targets in other countries.

The following is a statement from Demand Progress Senior Policy Advisor Cavan Kharrazian:

“We applaud Rep. Massie, Rep. Khanna and Sen. Kaine for introducing these resolutions to keep us out of yet another war in the Middle East. It should be in the interest of Republicans and Democrats to uphold the Constitution and prevent Israel from dragging us into a disastrous war with Iran. The American people, including a clear majority of Republican voters, believe the president must obtain congressional authorization before initiating strikes against another country. Congress must listen to them and reassert its constitutional war powers authority by passing these resolutions.”
