Aircraft Carrier Deployment Shows Need for War Powers Vote

As Risk of Unauthorized Caribbean War Rises, Senate Must Reassert War Powers Authority

Washington, D.C. — On Friday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth deployed an aircraft carrier and its strike group to the waters off South America. The move further escalates the risk of a regional war following multiple military recent strikes on Venezuelan boats. Demand Progress supported a previous Senate resolution requiring the president to seek congressional authorization before taking direct military action against Venezuela and is leading a campaign driving Americans to ask their senators to support war powers resolutions.

The following is a statement from Demand Progress Senior Policy Advisor Cavan Kharrazian:

“This deployment dramatically increases our chances of being pulled into a reckless, unauthorized war in the Caribbean even though we still have not seen any evidence justifying air strikes and a military presence in South America. In the absence of any transparency or accountability from the White House, Congress must step in and prevent us from being dragged into a regime change war in Venezuela. We call on all senators to support Sens. Tim Kaine and Rand Paul as they work to reassert the constitutional war powers authority of Congress.”
