Trump Effectively Declares War on Venezuela Through a Truth Social Post
Washington, D.C. — On Wednesday starting at 5:30 PM ET, the House of Representatives will vote on two resolutions to block President Donald Trump’s illegal acts of aggression in Venezuela. One resolution sponsored by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) would block the president’s deadly air strikes on boats in Venezuelan waters (H.Con.Res 61). The other resolution led by Reps. Jim McGovern (D-MA), and cosponsored by Thomas Massie (R-KY), Don Bacon (R-NE) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) would block land strikes in or invasion of Venezuela (H.Con.Res 64). Demand Progress supported previous resolutions requiring the president to seek congressional authorization before taking direct military action against Venezuela and is leading a campaign driving Americans to ask their representatives to support a Venezuela war powers resolution.
The following is a statement from Demand Progress Senior Policy Advisor Cavan Kharrazian:
“President Trump has effectively declared a war with Venezuela through a Truth Social post. It is time for Congress to reclaim its constitutional war powers authority and stop us from being dragged into another foreign, regime change war. Invading Venezuela would be a humanitarian and political disaster. The American people don’t want this, and rank and file members of both parties don’t want this. We call on all House members to support this bipartisan effort to stop a regime change war and reassert the role of Congress in determining when we go to war.”
