WASHINGTON, DC — This morning, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced an inquiry into the business practices of data brokers. Specifically, the CFPB will be looking into how these companies’ practices around the buying and selling of personal data impact the daily lives of consumers.
In response, Demand Progress Senior Policy Counsel Sean Vitka issued the following statement:
“Data brokers have been violating consumers’ privacy for far too long, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have ways of fighting back. Congress has already created protections against the wrongful use of our information, and the CFPB has just taken a first step toward bringing that to bear on this vampiric shadow industry. We eagerly await their next move.”
