Washington, D.C. — On Friday at 6 PM ET, the U.S. Senate will vote on a war powers resolution sponsored by Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) that would require the president to seek congressional authorization before taking direct military action against Iran. Demand Progress has led a campaign calling on Americans to tell their members of Congress to support the war powers resolutions and oppose war with Iran.
The following is a statement from Demand Progress Senior Policy Advisor Cavan Kharrazian:
“The Senate must pass the Iran War Powers Resolution. In just days, we’ve gone from a supposed two-week decision window to immediate U.S. airstrikes, a brief ceasefire, Israel and Iran trading fire again and now another fragile pause. We strongly support diplomatic efforts to end this crisis—but Congress can’t sit back and hope for the best while the risk of U.S. involvement in unauthorized hostilities remains. This resolution is essential to reassert Congress’s sole constitutional authority to decide matters of war, and to send a clear message to current and future administrations: no more unauthorized hostilities. No more putting U.S. service members and civilians in harm’s way without so much as a debate or vote in Congress. The American people don’t want another war in the Middle East—Congress needs to finally listen.”
