Grassroots Coalition: Senate Must Block Weapons Sales to Israel

Washington, DC — This week, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is expected to force a yes-or-no vote in the U.S. Senate on two Joint Resolutions of Disapproval that would block the sale of certain offensive weapons to the Israeli military. The No Weapons for Israel’s War coalition has been driving their millions of supporters to call on senators to support these resolutions.

Last fall, 19 Democratic and Independent Senators voted to support similar resolutions blocking arms transfers to Israel. The No Weapons for War website tracks how senators voted and allows the public to petition Congress. Demand Progress is the lead organizer of the No Weapons for Israel’s War coalition.

The following is a statement from Demand Progress Senior Policy Advisor Cavan Kharrazian:

“The Israeli military has used US weapons to ruthlessly kill tens of thousands of Palestinian men, women and children; continues to prevent food, water, fuel and medicine from entering Gaza and keeps threatening to expand their war to neighboring countries.

Instead of enabling more destruction, the U.S. should be pressing for a restoration of the ceasefire and a humanitarian aid surge — not handing over more bombs and sending a message of total impunity. More and more Americans, including many Senators, are speaking out against this horror like never before.

We do not want our tax dollars to fund mass civilian death, we do not want more war in the Middle East and we especially do not want to bankroll ethnic cleansing so President Trump can build a so-called ‘Riviera of the Middle East.’ This moment demands moral clarity. We call on all Senators to reject complicity in ongoing atrocities and push for peace by supporting Sen. Sanders’s resolutions.”
